Description

Rebecca Adamson, probably Columbiana County, Ohio, 1826, silk on linen. Highly graphic sampler with pine and willow trees, baskets of flowers, strawberries, and birds, and with a central verse and name/date. In its original figured maple frame. 22" high, 21" wide. Genealogical research has identified only a couple of possible Rebecca Adamsons of the right age to have made this sampler. Based on provenance and style, the likeliest candidate was born in 1817 to a Quaker family in Middleton Township, Columbiana County. Her parents were Thomas (1790-1847) and Elizabeth (1796-1854), originally from Washington County, Pennsylvania, and Rebecca was the oldest of ten children. In 1836, she married Enos Woods (1815-1875), whose family was from Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The couple had seven children and spent the remainder of their lives in Alliance, Stark County. Provenance: the collection of the late Jo Louise Brown, Zoar, Ohio. In-house shipping is available for this lot. Please see our terms for details.

Condition: Colors are still strong and quite vivid, expected toning to the linen ground.
