Salem, appears to be dated April 10, 1829, pine. Six-board, dovetailed chest with canted sides, beckets, original "fish tail" strap hinges, and old blue paint. 17" high, 44.5" wide, 16.5" deep. According to Mrs. Brown’s notes, this chest was originally owned by a ship master ?John Prentis, ? and was purchased out of a "1753 house at 53 Summer St. Salem, Mass." As is often the case, the information is not entirely accurate, but has some factual information. The house at 53 Summer Street in Salem was actually built in 1756, and it still stands today (recently fully restored). There was a ship captain named John Bubier Prentiss (1770-1817) who sailed out of nearby Marblehead (he was one of many sea faring Prentisses in Marblehead), but we could find no connection between the Prentiss family and 53 Summer St. We did, however, find a John Preston (1821-1891), a baker, who did reside at 53 Summer St. More research may untangle the Prentiss-Preston connection to this chest, but we are fairly certain that the chest was owned by Francis Juggins Jr. (1907-1986), the son of a prominent Boston attorney. In Francis Jr.?s later life, he moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio. We believe he acquired this chest, as well as the card table also in this auction, from 53 Summer St., and then brought it to Ohio, and Mrs. Brown ultimately acquired it from him or his estate. Provenance: the collection of the late Jo Louise Brown, Zoar, Ohio. Pickup or freight shipping is required for this lot. Please see our terms for details.
Condition: Beckets are missing rope handles.
